Skagit County is located in northwestern Washington on the coast of Puget Sound and the Juan de Fuca Strait. It comprises the Mount Vernon-Anacortes, Washington Metropolitan Statistical Area and is included in the Seattle-Tacoma, Washington Combined Statistical Area. Skagit County is home to approximately 120,000 residents.

History

Skagit County is named for its original inhabitants, the Skagit Native American tribe, and was formed in 1883. The area was popular for settlers due to its fertile soil and mild weather patterns, which both make for an abundance of strawberries and tulips. The fishing and timber industries also found a natural home here.

Skagit County is home to many parks and protected lands popular with outdoor enthusiasts, including parts of Mount Baker-Snoqualmie National Forest, North Cascades National Park, Ross Lake National Recreation Area, and the Pacific Northwest National Scenic Trail.

Skagit County houses the cities of Mount Vernon, Sedro-Woolley, Anacortes, and Burlington, as well as the smaller towns of La Conner, Concrete, Hamilton, and Lyman.
